- Advanced tools to design future jet engines
Increasingly stringent requirements for energy efficiency and noise reduction in jet engines are tightening the screw in their development and design. Cenaero, an applied research centre for modeling and numerical simulation, is developing new methods that will help in designing high-performance jet engines. Cenaero was granted access to PRACE resources in PRACE Preparatory Access for an industrial pilot project “noFUDGE”. Read more...

- New insights into using “the process that powers the stars”
Turbulence simulations, carried out in the framework of the PRACE Research Infrastructure , have provided new insights into the fundamental processes of turbulent transport. This research is contributing to the understanding and optimisation of magnetic confinement in fusion devices. Ultimately, the goal is to be able to make predictions for ITER, an international flagship fusion experiment being built in Southern France. Read more...

- A step forward in understanding electron transfer in organic solar cell materials
Organic solar cells have a promising future in renewable energy generation. However, there are a number of problems to be solved before they can break into the energy market. Characterisation of electron transfer in organic solar cell materials has taken one step forward, when a research team calculated charge carrier mobility and material structure with PRACE supercomputing resources. - Solving the mysteries of swine flu, epileptic seizure and other diseases
Paolo Carloni’s research group from German Research School for Simulation Sciences in Jülich was among the first projects which were granted access to the PRACE resources. Carloni’s group was granted for 48 758 784 core-hours on the JUGENE IBM BlueGene/P in the PRACE first regular call. The allocation is for one year ranging from November 2010 to October 2011.
