PRACE awards 35 million core hours in newly created ‘PRACE Industry Access Track’

The ‘PRACE Industry Access Track’ represents a new chapter in the evolution of PRACE as a major partner in Europe supporting excellence in research through HPC. Historically rooted in science with billions of core hours awarded since 2010, PRACE continues to widen its scope to foster the inclusion of purely industrial applications in its 19th Call for Proposals for Project Access, reserving 10% of the total resources in each Call.

By doubling the percentage of resources offered compared to the uptake so far and by adapting our Tier-0 Project Access to make it fairer to industry-supported proposals, we hope to give an incentive to potential industrial applicants,” said Serge Bogaerts, Managing Director of PRACE.

In this 19th Call for Proposals, French industry heavyweights Renault and Safran applied successfully with two major projects in their respective Research & Development operations. CornerLES – Corner Separation Predictions using Large Eddy Simulations was awarded 20.4 million core hours on Joliot Curie-AMD@GENCI@CEA, France. This project will be led by Dr Dimitrios Papadogiannis from Safran Tech (Magny-Les-Hameaux, France) and is dedicated to predicting the corner separation phenomenon in compressors using Large Eddy Simulations. The findings can be directly employed to improve the current compressor design practices.

This PRACE allocation will allow us to analyse in unprecedented detail the corner separation occurring in compressors of aeronautical engines. Corner separation is an undesirable phenomenon that can greatly impact the efficiency and operability of the engine. Understanding its origins and dynamics, through high-fidelity HPC simulations, is essential in our research for ever more efficient and green designs. Such results will also be of high interest for lower fidelity model development and calibrations,” said Dr Papadogiannis.

TJIR-ICE – Turbulent Jet Ignition Research Applied to Ultra Lean Premixed Combustion in Internal Combustion Engine was awarded 15 million core hours on Joliot Curie-SKL@GENCI@CEA, France. This project will be led by Dr Frédéric Ravet from the Mechanical Division at Renault SAS (Lardy, France) and will investigate the ignition and flame propagation processes in a lean premixed combustion system applied to future automotive engines to limit CO2 emissions significantly.

As Dr. Lee Margetts, Chair of the PRACE Industrial Advisory Committee, points out: “We hope that these first two projects will lead the way to more European companies finding their way to PRACE and HPC.
