Welcome to the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) Outreach to Universities programme, the one-stop shop for the latest student-centric information, educational opportunities and more.
These activities are especially designed to encourage advanced HPC, Computational Science, Simulation and Data Science studies and highlight their benefits and value.
Sign up to the PRACE Outreach to Universities programme mailing list to be kept informed of all PRACE activities which are aimed at students.
PRACE will be holding a number of “Student Events”.
In such events, PRACE staff may visit universities to present PRACE to a university course, a university department’s seminar series or a university’s colloquium series. Similarly, a university class may visit a PRACE HPC center. In such events a class will visit a PRACE member HPC site and local personnel will present them their HPC center, PRACE and their HPC system.
These events will be carried out by PRACE staff at local universities.

Summer of HPC
Summer of HPC is a PRACE programme that offers summer placements at HPC centres across Europe. Up to 20 top applicants from across Europe are selected to participate each year. Participants spend two months working on projects related to PRACE technical or industrial work to produce a visualisation or video. The programme usually runs from start of July to end of August each year.
Flights, accommodation and a stipend are provided to all successful applicants, thus all that participants need to bring is their interest in computing and some enthusiasm!
Applications are welcome from all disciplines. Previous experience in HPC is not required. Some coding knowledge is a prerequisite but the most important attribute is a desire to learn more about HPC and share their experience with others. A strong visual flair and an interest in blogging, video blogging or social media are desirable.
Applications for the PRACE Summer of HPC programme usually open in January of each year. Sign up to the PRACE Outreach to Universities program mailing list to be kept informed of when this occurs.

PRACE Training events are held throughout the year and throughout Europe and can appear in one of the following forms:
- PRACE Advanced Training Centres (PATCs) Training Events
- PRACE Training Centres (PTCs) Training Events
- Seasonal Schools
- International HPC Summer School

PRACE Advanced Training Centres (PATCs) Training Events
PRACE operates six PRACE Advanced Training Centres (PATCs) and they have established a state-of-the-art curriculum for training in HPC and scientific computing. PATCs carry out and coordinate training and education activities that enable both European academic researchers and European industry to utilise the computational infrastructure available through PRACE and provide top-class education and training opportunities for computational scientists in Europe.
With over 70 training events each year, the six PRACE Advanced Training Centres (PATCs) are based at:
- Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Spain)
- Consorzio Interuniversitario, CINECA (Italy)
- CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd (Finland)
- EPCC at the University of Edinburgh (UK)
- Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (Germany)
- Maison de la Simulation (France)
PATC training events are advertised on the following pages. Registration is free and open to all (pending availability):
The following figure depicts the location of the PATC and PTC centers throughout Europe.
PRACE Training Centres (PTCs) Training Events
PTCs expand the geographical reach of PATCs by sourcing PATC courses locally, collaborating with PATCs in delivering courses locally or by complementing the PATC programme with local courses.
Each PTC will deliver 3-4 training events each year, and the four PRACE Training Centers (PTCs) are based at:
- GRNET – Greek Research and Technology Network (Greece)
- ICHEC – Irish Centre for High-End Computing (Ireland)
- IT4I – National Supercomputing Center VSB Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic)
- SURFsara (The Netherlands)
PTC training events are advertised on the following page. Registration is free and open to all (pending availability):
Seasonal schools complement the PATC and PTC training program with three such events usually held throughout the year. One is usually held in Autumn, one in Winter and one in Spring. Each of these is held in a non-PATC/PTC country and at different geographical locations. Their curriculum is also different and usually varies to that of the PATC/PTC events. PRACE Seasonal Schools are advertised on the following page. Registration is free and open to all (pending availability):
International HPC Summer School
The International HPC Summer School is organised in collaboration with US (XSEDE), Japan (RIKEN), and Canada (ComputeCanada). The 2018 International HPC Summer School will be organised in Europe and more details of this event can be found on the following website:
PRACE has developed two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and these are hosted on the Future Learn Platform. These are:
This free online course will introduce you to what supercomputers are, how they are used, how we can exploit their full computational potential to empower scientific breakthroughs.
- Managing Big Data with R and Hadoop
This free online course will introduce you to various high performance computing (HPC) facilities for big data analysis such as the R programming language and Hadoop, and how these tools can be used in the most efficient manner.
Both of these MOOCs can be found in the following page:
Both MOOCs are free and periodically re-run – opening for new enrollments in different times of the year. In addition, PRACE will also create new MOOCs.
Sign up to the PRACE Outreach to Universities program mailing list to be kept informed of MOOC news.
Science and Career Fairs
PRACE attends various Science Fairs, Career Fairs and Museums Exhibitions held in different project partner countries. PRACE does this to encourage members of the young generation to choose a career in fields related to science and technology and to build the next generation of HPC users.
PRACE aims to be present in such events in an interactive manner through various exhibition items with which the audience can engage in a descriptive and educational manner.
PRACE plans to be present at the following events:

PRACE has created games as part of its outreach activities. These games are Mars Mania and Shooting Stars. Shooting Stars was created within the context of the PRACE “Dare to Think the Impossible” outreach campaign, while Mars Mania draws upon the work on Vlasiator.
These games are used in public events and science fairs around Europe to explain the power of supercomputers to younger audiences and can also be installed on smartphones for personal enjoyment.
Let the Mars Mania begin!
The game is created around the popular idea of sending and guiding a probe to Mars and avoiding obstacles and unpredictable space weather conditions. Click here for more information on the Mars Mania game.
Shooting Stars is a physics puzzle game where you get to control the planets of a star system. Simulate orbiting planets and gravitational forces in the searing heat of the sun. See how many planets you can keep in orbit. Test your skills in many ways, with different scenarios that give you a taste of the world of supercomputer simulation PRACE offers. Click here for more information on the Shooting Stars game and the Dare to Think the Impossible outreach campaign.
