PRACE 12th Call for Proposals Reinforces FET Flagship Projects

The 12th PRACE Regular Call for Proposals yielded 92 eligible proposals of which 27 (including 2 continuations of multi-year projects from the 10th Call) were awarded a total of 689.2 million core hours. This brings the total awarded projects to 435 and the total awarded core hours to 11.4 thousand million.

The 25 awarded projects and 2 multi-year continuations are led by principal investigators from 10 different European countries. This Call also welcomed scientists and researchers from Canada, India and USA as collaborators in several projects.

Seven overall scientific domains are represented: 4 projects are linked to the fields of Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Life Sciences; 7 to Chemistry; 1 to Earth System Sciences; 7 to Engineering; 4 to Fundamental Physics; 1 to Mathematics and Computer Sciences and 3 to Universe Sciences.

The largest allocation under the 12th Call is the project entitled HEliOS — Hall Effects in Organic Semiconductors led by Dr. Frank Ottmann from the Technical University of Dresden. The project received 69.4 million core hours on FERMI @ CINECA, Italy also receives support from the DFG (German Research Foundation).

A number of awards support research which has also been identified as excellent by other European grant- awarding bodies.

One PRACE-awarded project is linked to the IMI consortium K4DD: Molecular Dynamics Simulations for Computing Kinetic Constants for Drug Discovery led by Dr. Marc Bianciotti. The project received 33 million core hours on Fermi @CINECA, Italy. This project is linked to industry, involving SANOFI (France) as project leader.

One PRACE-awarded project is linked to the FET Graphene Flagship program: Charge and Spin Hall Kubo Conductivity by Order N Real Space Methods led by Dr. Stephan Roche. The project received 19.8 million core hours on MareNostrum @BSC, Spain.

One PRACE-awarded project is linked to the FET Human Brain Flagship program: SMOLER, Synaptic Mechanisms underlying Odor LEarning and Recognition led by Dr. Michele Migliore. The project received 13 million core hours on Fermi @CINECA, Italy.

Under the 12th Call PRACE also awarded resources to 4 ERC-funded projects, 3 allocations are linked to FP7 projects, 2 EC FET Flagship programmes, while 11 other projects receive grants under various national programmes.

The 13th Call for Proposals for PRACE Project Access (Tier-0) opened 7 March until 1 April (noon) 2016. Selected proposals will receive allocations to PRACE resources from September 2016 to September 2017.
