SHAPE (SME HPC Adoption Programme in Europe) is a pan-European programme supported by PRACE which aims to raise awareness and provide European SMEs with the expertise necessary to take advantage of the innovation possibilities created by HPC, thus increasing their competitiveness. Following the success of previous calls, PRACE aisbl launched a third SHAPE call for proposals. This call opened on 16 November 2015 and closed on 14 January 2016. The Selection Committee, made up of representatives of the PRACE Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC), the PRACE Board of Directors (BoD) and the PRACE IP Project, reviewed all applications and awarded eight innovative projects submitted by European SMEs for access to PRACE systems.
The eight awarded projects from four different countries are:
|ACOBIOM||France||MARS (Matrix of RNA-Seq)|
|Airinnova AB||Sweden||High level optimization in aerodynamic design|
|AmpliSIM||France||DemocraSIM: DEMOCRatic Air quaility SIMulation|
|ANEMOS SRL||Italy||SUNSTAR: Simulation of UNSteady Turbulent flows for the AeRospace industry|
|BAC Engineering Consultancy Group||Spain||Numerical simulation of accidental fires with a spillage of oil in large buildings|
|Creo Dynamics AB||Sweden||Large scale aero-acoustics applications using open source CFD|
|FDD Engitec S.L.||Spain||Pressure drop simulation for a compressed gas closed system|
|Pharmacelera||Spain||HPC methodologies for PharmScreen|
The SMEs leading these projects come from a diverse range of industries, including medicine, aerodynamic engineering, climate modelling, aerospace, energy, aero-acoustics, aeronautics, and drug discovery.
“As former Vice-Chair and current Chair of the PRACE Industrial Advisory Committee, I am pleased to see the growing uptake of HPC by European SMEs,” said Anders Rhod Gregersen of Vestas Wind Systems A/S. “Much of Europe’s innovation comes from SMEs and start-ups and the HPC support offered by PRACE will certainly encourage this further.”
Several projects will be using Open Source software or commercial HPC applications with the involvement of the software vendors. They will receive support and expertise via PRACE Preparatory Access Type C to port, develop, and optimise their codes through the PRACE-4IP project, which is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (2014- 2020) under grant agreement 653838.
SHAPE (SME HPC Adoption Programme in Europe) is a pan-European programme supported by PRACE. The Programme aims to raise awareness and provide European SMEs with the expertise necessary to take advantage of the innovation possibilities created by High-Performance Computing (HPC), thus increasing their competitiveness. The programme allows SMEs to benefit from the expertise and knowledge developed within the top-class PRACE Research Infrastructure. Since its inception in 2014, SHAPE has supported projects from close to 30 European companies. For more information, see www.prace-ri.eu/shape/.
